In Love: Ashley + Matt

My wife and I got the chance to hang out with our good friends Ashley and Matt this past weekend. It’s always fun to hang out with these two lovebirds and this time it was cool to be able to snap some photos of them as well. We set aside a quick hour to stroll through the not-so-green rolling hills of Irvine for some quick pics so we could build up an appetite for our dinner date. It definitely worked…well, for me at least. It always does.:)

In Love : Ali + Andrew

Ali + Andrew are simply awesome!

I met them last month through the sometimes-not-so-wonderful site Craigslist.com. Our initial meeting, however, had nothing to do with photography. I was selling 2 chairs on there that they were interested in purchasing for an event vintage rental company that they are starting up. Unfortunately, the sell didn’t happen, but I definitely feel like I got something better out of it. Seeing that they were both very laid back people, and knowing that they had a lot of cool “antiques” on hand, I decided to go on a whim and ask if they would like to collaborate on a shoot one day. I told them to check out my blog and to get back to me if they were interested. Well, about a month and a half later, we made it happen.

Me, Ali + Andrew, and my longtime friend and fellow aspiring photographer AJ Perkins (who contributed a few of these shots as well) set out to our destination with our gear on hand and a truck full vintage pieces and we shot the day away. We probably shot a lot longer than we needed to, but Ali + Andrew were super troopers the whole time so we took advantage of everything we were working with and shot for as long as we could. Also, major props (no pun intended) go to Ali and AJ Perkins for a lot of the design aspect of the shoot. It was awesome.

Road Trip: Seattle, Washington

I took advantage of some much needed time off from work this past week and headed up north on a road trip to Seattle, Washington with my wife. This excursion was nothing short of amazing. We spent a total of 5 nights in Seattle and during this time we got to see and do a variety of things including the EMP Museum, Pacific Science Center, Space Needle, Argosy Harbor Cruise, Seattle Aquarium, Woodland Park Zoo, The Museum of Flight, and The Underground tour. I would definitely say that we saw A LOT in Seattle, but various parts of the drive up and back home were incredible as well. In fact, some of my favorite sights from the trip were on the road. There were some astonishing views as we drove from Eugene, Oregon to the Coast (hwy 101) and they continued well into our drive south through the beautiful redwoods of Northern California. I didn’t spend much time taking all the pictures I wanted to take since it can be difficult trying to balance out travel and photography (especially when you’re not traveling alone), but here are some quick snapshots that I was able to get. Some with my DSLR and some with my trusty iPhone.:)

Robert Arroyo Photo - Haha.. Thanks a lot Raymond!.. We definitely have some cool places here in Southern CA, but it’s just a whole different level out there. I think Oregon was my favorite :)

Raymond Romua - Great pictures my friend. You can never go wrong with nature pictures. You don’t get any of that in Orange County. Great Job.

Bridal Event: UNVEILED LA

I took another opportunity to learn ‘hands on’ this weekend at the Unveiled bridal show in Downtown L.A. Not only did I get to meet a lot of great people/vendors, but I had the chance to shoot some amazing wedding decor as well. There was PLENTY to shoot here and at times it was a bit overwhelming since this is new to me, but it was a great learning experience.

Making Room For Improvement

This transitional phase in my photography has been quite interesting so far. With most of my background being in sports and concert photography and wanting to now focus on couples, families and weddings, I have been doing the most I can to learn new techniques and develop a shooting style that allows me to creatively capture compelling images. In the past two months I have done a tremendous amount of research online, watched online seminars, searched through numerous books and magazine and had two sessions with Raymond+Betzy and Liz+Kalup. But I didn’t stop there. This past weekend I assisted and second shot (image above) an engagement session with my friend and talented wedding photographer Benedick David so I could learn a thing or two and just see how another photographer runs his show. It was a good learning experience.

In the coming weeks I will continue to learn as much as I can. However, my emphasis now will be on shooting more. I believe I have a strong enough foundation to build on and I’m excited to see where this takes me.
